The Walk is a real life account of an adolescent boy, Brima Lamin, whose desperation for survival took him across several foreign countries ultimately seeking refuge in the United States. In this gripping memoir, the author tells how the entire course of his life was changed on one horrendous day, July 2, 1990 when rebel soldiers armed with AK-47s stormed his neighborhood. Over the course of four years to follow, he witnessed brutal atrocities barely escaping death during what many call one of the most horrific wars of all time, the Liberian Civil War. In the midst of losing it all, he came of age, found God and was able to come to a country that he had always dreamed about.

Once I started reading this memoir, I couldn't put it down. It is difficult to imagine how the atrocities that occur during war can happen-let alone how anyone could survive it all. In the beginning, even the authors themselves write, "We really didn't think much of the (Liberian) news reports because it seemed to be an isolated incident, far from where we lived" but , "this was happening. Not in some far off place or unknown land, but right here in my own neighborhood". This book is an important read for several reasons. Civil wars can happen in any country and, with much dividing our citizens here in the US, it could happen here again. This book is a reminder of how seemingly minor disagreements (in politics, for example) can escalate into real dangers. It is also a reminder that our country is still together (despite disagreements) therefore, when refugees seek help from us, we need to do our best to help them. Having presidential candidates make sweeping comments such as, "Lock your doors", "we can't let them into this country period" makes refugees seem evil and faceless. It instills fear in the public towards people we don't even know. This book succeeds in putting some names and faces on refugees. It reminds us that they are, essentially, innocent human beings who found themselves in someone else's hideous disagreements. They are mothers, fathers and children in horrible circumstances who protect each other to the best of their ability with love, sacrifice and tremendous strength of character. I highly recommend reading The Walk not only for it's importance but because, after reading it, you may find yourself with more gratitude for the circumstances in your life along with more compassion for others because you never know what that person has gone through.Product details

This is a very compelling story about LIFE my brother and a teaching moment how we can overcome challenges and adversity in our lives. This tells the truth about not giving up and the power of your FAITH to have persevered.
This book was such a great read! I loved how he told the whole story eventhough he went threw difficult times he still manages to throw some humor in this book! I read it in two days so encourage to know with GODS threw Faith, Love, Trust & Endurance u can come threw anything. Well done Mr. & Mrs Lamin😊 Also much love for having strong parents! Love u guys!
In American society, we are sheltered from a lot of world events and suffering. Reading this book will provide you with an insight into the struggles that many Liberians faced throughout their Civil War and it really puts into perspective what many refugees are escaping. I am looking forward to the follow up book about a refugees transition into American society.
What a thought provoking story of strength in the face of adversity! The author's recount of his struggle to escape the dangers of war is one that can appeal to all American teenagers who are seeking to understand more about the trials of other teens across the globe. This book was so amazing, i read it in one day, once I picked it up , it was hard to put down .. It's hard to believe that a child that young had to go though so much , as I was reading it , i felt like I was right there with him, it made me laugh and it made me cry ...so happy that he survived everything and is here to tell his story... I would recommend everyone to pick up a copy...its a good read👀
I learned a lot about Liberia and the Civil War from reading this book. It gave a great perspective on how the war affected the people, and really made me think about the plight of refugees worldwide. Thank you for making this public!
I was twelve when all of this was going on. While I was complaining about not having enough time to play Super Mario Brothers, the author of The Walk was witnessing atrocities of Civil War in his own back yard. We Americans take our safety for granted. This is an eye opening memoir, a read that all the way through out I was shaking my head in awe. The author, Brima Lamin, recollects things that no eleven-year-old boy should witness.
I can't imagine what he must have felt to watch his father beg for his life to be spared by rebels who had no regard for human life. I for one, am glad that he has lived to tell this story. We all have a story that molds us to who we are. He did not give up, he kept walking, emerging with a new hope and resilience, finally making it to American soil. A place far away from the hell he so longed to forget. A quick, fantastic read.
