This is a meticulously researched, well documented and well written book. Also, it is a hell of a lot of fun to read. The approach is totally unique, as it refers the reader to playlists of music, on the author’s website, which musically illustrate what is discussed in the text. The narrated stories come alive as one listens to the music. It makes tango music approachable and understandable to the layman and undoubtedly fills in many blanks for those more experienced in tango music.Musicality is generally difficult for tango dancers with an untrained ear. However, the author walks one right through the songs, one by one, and tells one how to listen, what to listen for, and how to isolate the various instruments in the orchestras. Also, the discographies are thoughtfully assembled and clearly laid out in tables.
Last but not least, the book contains two much needed chapters on “Cheerful Tango” and “Get Happy”. I have lived, on and off over the last 45 years, in many countries in South America and I know that the lighter, more playful side of tango is something that few Europeans or North Americans get a chance to properly experience.
This book is much more than just another good read on the tango. It could easily be the textbook for a year-long university course on the music and musicality of the tango. Thank you Michael. Five Stars!
